The dream of bringing fresh, crystal-clear water from the Varano spring to the town of Nepi has spanned centuries, starting with the first attempts in 1559. This aspiration, which involved numerous architects, including the brilliant mind of Vignola, faced insurmountable technical obstacles, remaining unfulfilled until the decisive intervention of Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali in the 18th century. It was thanks to his vision and the expertise of architect Filippo Barigioni and master builder Giuseppe Bernascone that, in 1727, the ambitious project was finally completed, marking the beginning of a new era for Nepi and its inhabitants.
To celebrate the activation of the aqueduct, the imposing fountain that still dominates Piazza del Comune was built, located within the central arch of the Town Hall.
The aqueduct stretches for three miles, a true masterpiece of engineering that, with its 36 arches, crosses the rural landscape until it reaches the town walls, overcoming the deep ravine carved by the Falisco stream with a monumental structure that evokes the grandeur of Roman aqueducts.
