One of the most beautiful views of Nepi is that framed by the arches of its Aqueduct. A masterpiece of immeasurable historical value, nestled between the ancient walls of the town. This extraordinary engineering work, the result of centuries of history, stands as a tangible testament to human skill and perseverance in overcoming the challenges posed by nature.

The Nepi Aqueduct: Between History, Engineering, and Nature

The dream of bringing fresh, crystal-clear water from the Varano spring to the town of Nepi has spanned centuries, starting with the first attempts in 1559. This aspiration, which involved numerous architects, including the brilliant mind of Vignola, faced insurmountable technical obstacles, remaining unfulfilled until the decisive intervention of Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali in the 18th century. It was thanks to his vision and the expertise of architect Filippo Barigioni and master builder Giuseppe Bernascone that, in 1727, the ambitious project was finally completed, marking the beginning of a new era for Nepi and its inhabitants.

To celebrate the activation of the aqueduct, the imposing fountain that still dominates Piazza del Comune was built, located within the central arch of the Town Hall.

The aqueduct stretches for three miles, a true masterpiece of engineering that, with its 36 arches, crosses the rural landscape until it reaches the town walls, overcoming the deep ravine carved by the Falisco stream with a monumental structure that evokes the grandeur of Roman aqueducts. This imposing construction not only testifies to the advanced technical knowledge of the time but also tells the story of a community that was able to look to the future, investing resources and ingenuity to improve the living conditions of its citizens.

The Nepi Aqueduct, with its dramatic presence, has captured the imagination of artists and filmmakers, becoming the subject of works of art and cinematic films. Its fame has crossed national borders, attracting the interest of notable figures such as William Turner, who immortalized its sinuous forms in his travel sketches, and directors like Mario Monicelli and Nino Manfredi, who chose its arches as the backdrop for some of the most striking scenes in their films.

Today, the Nepi Aqueduct not only continues to serve its original function, supplying the public fountains of the city, but also stands as an undeniable point of interest for those who wish to explore places where history intertwines with natural beauty.

The Nepi Aqueduct thus invites an exploration that goes beyond a mere tourist visit, offering a unique experience where knowledge and admiration blend into a deep connection with the cultural and natural heritage of this land. Coming to Nepi means embarking on a fascinating journey through history, art, and tradition, where every stone, every arch tells stories of challenges, innovations, and human triumphs that made the realization of this engineering marvel possible.

We invite everyone to discover the Nepi Aqueduct, to be enchanted by its grandeur and the history it carries, in a journey that unites the past with the present in a continuous and ever-living dialogue.
