On October 12, 2024, Nepi is set to host an event of profound spirituality: the 7th Catacomb Day – Autumn Edition. The Catacomb of Santa Savinilla, one of the most fascinating sites in the area, will take center stage during this day dedicated to the memory of martyrs and the ancient Early Christian cemeteries.

The event, promoted by the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, embraces this year’s theme, “From Remembrance to Prayer,” aligning with Pope Francis’ initiative to dedicate the year to prayer in preparation for the Jubilee of 2025.

A Spiritual Journey into the Depths of History

Participating in this day is not just about discovering an ancient archaeological site but also about experiencing a unique blend of spirituality and culture. Visiting the Catacomb of Santa Savinilla offers a way to connect with the early Christian community, their sacrifices, and their unwavering faith. These catacombs were not merely burial sites but symbols of resistance and testimonies to the Christian faith during times of persecution.

The Martyrs of Nepi: Tolomeo and Romano

Catacomb Day will also commemorate Nepi’s two martyrs, Tolomeo and Romano, whose relics rest within the catacomb. Their story of courage and devotion will be celebrated not only at their burial site but also at the Town Hall, where restored masterpieces depicting them will be presented to the public. These precious panels, created by Antonio del Massaro da Viterbo, known as “Il Pastura,” are invaluable artistic treasures, reflecting the profound connection between art and spirituality in Nepi’s history.

Event Schedule

The day’s program includes a series of unmissable events that intertwine culture, art, and faith:
