Every year, Nepi transforms to host one of its most colorful and beloved events: the feast of Madonna di Costantinopoli, affectionately known as the “Madonna of the Mad.” This year, the celebrations will take place from May 9 to May 12, promising days filled with faith, folklore, and fun in what feels like a true spring carnival.

A Centuries-Old Tradition

The Madonna of the Mad is a celebration brimming with enthusiasm and participation, drawing residents and visitors alike into a whirlwind of traditions dating back more than four centuries. The devotion to this sacred figure, represented in the image housed in the Church of San Giovanni Decollato, is more than a simple religious observance; it’s an event that highlights Nepi’s unique identity.

The Program

Thanks to the organization by the Pious Union of Madonna di Costantinopoli, this year’s program is rich and diverse. It begins with a three-day preparation leading up to the main event, held every evening at 4:30 PM from May 9 to May 11, offering moments of reflection and prayer that culminate with the recitation of the Holy Rosary.

On Saturday at 5:00 PM, the candle collection takes place, a meaningful moment where children—the true stars of the event—receive the large candles they will carry during the procession.

On Sunday morning at 10:30 AM, the traditional candle procession begins at the Cathedral and winds its way through the heart of the town, accompanied by the lively tunes of the Nepi Band. At 11:00 AM, a Solemn Mass will be celebrated at the Church of San Giovanni Decollato, offering a moment of deep spirituality.

An Afternoon of Festivities

Following the Mass, at 12:30 PM, the “beverino” opens in Piazza San Giovanni, where guests can enjoy traditional local flavors like fava beans, pecorino cheese, and local wine in a warm and festive atmosphere.

The celebrations continue in the afternoon with “Musica Migrante” at 5:00 PM, a performance that transcends geographic and cultural boundaries, uniting people through music.

At 8:00 PM, don’t miss the “Most Creative Mask” Contest, which rewards originality and creativity, followed by an energetic DJ set by F-Tee at 8:30 PM, featuring revival hits from the ’80s and ’90s that will have everyone dancing.
